There is a lot of noise made about workers using internet at work. There are all kinds of statistics describing how much time was lost due to this. But everyone consents to the fact that there is no reduction in productivity levels. I am not sure if that is really the right perspective to look at it. Here are a few reasons why internet browsing at work is helping employees.
1. Employees are not going to someone else's desk to chat or disturb them.
2. They are at their desks more time than normally expected, so they are available to other folks more time.
3. They are accessing various personal/work related resources from their own workstations.
4. They are not bugging colleagues for help. They are finding it themselves by googling or by some other means.
5. They are finding their own entertainment instead of from other people at work.
The bottom line is people no longer take up others' time. This is not abusing internet policies at work. People always waste time one way or the other and this is a better way to use time than disturbing others. So all the time they indulge in browsing is not lost rather used for relaxation, so they could work better once they come back to their regular duties. Don't you agree?
